Music is central to life at King's Rochester and every pupil can participate from the very first steps into "Colourstrings" in Nursery right through to the accomplished performances of Sixth Formers about to embark on musical degrees...
Music is a jewel in King's crown. Our Music School offers variety and vitality and each year, talented Sixth Form performers leave us, very often with Scholarships, to take up places at prestigious, specialist Music institutions such as the Royal Academy and the Royal College of Music. If you want to shine as a soloist playing or singing in concerts in the splendour of Rochester Cathedral, you can. If you want to perform ambitious, unforgettable pieces by Bach, Handel or Vivaldi, you can. Equally, if you want to join a Choir, play in the Chamber Orchestra or String Quartet, or in the Jazz, Brass, Rock or Wind Bands, you can. But King's is also a place where a pupil's interest in music can begin. It's all here for you.
No surprise then that King’s musicians are often finalists in regional and national music competitions such as Kent Young Musician of the Year and the Woodard Schools Young Musician of the Year. In 2016, it was a King’s musician who took first place in the BBC Young Chorister of The Year.
With a varied programme of music throughout the School, much of which is performed in the Cathedral, there is always a perfomance in rehearsal somewhere. It might be for a Pre-Prep concert where the opportunities to shine and grow in confidence begin, or in the Prep and Senior Schools where regular formal and informal music concerts, Open Mic Nights and annual House music and drama productions are performed with high levels of professionalism.
Our most recent production was a performance of Titanic the Musical involving over 100 pupils. Previous productions have including Into the Woods, Sweeny Todd and Les Miserables. Prep School successes have included Honk, Bugsy Malone, Little Shop of Horrors and Carpe Jugulum.
As the oldest Cathedral Choir School in the world King's also educates all of the boy and several of the girl Cathedral Choristers (aged 8-13). Senior pupils are privileged to be able to use the magnificent Cathedral every day as their School Chapel and begin every day with a service held within this majestic space. Every Tuesday, Prep pupils hold their Cathedral service to which parents are warmly invited.
